10/18/2022 0 Comments October Learning and CelebrationsIn our past couple of weeks we have been really getting into some dense learning. During math we have started to discuss different types of word problems. We have to tackle each type of problem differently, and knowing how a fact family works has been helping us do that. During word work we have been practicing with bonus letters, and we've been trying to solidify our blend knowledge. For some students hearing both sounds in a blend (for example the BL in the word blend) can be difficult. Last Friday, we continued our work with the properties of materials by talking about insulators and conductors. We used different materials as "mittens": foil, Styrofoam, and fabric. Then we tested whether or not we could feel the difference between a cold and hot bottle of water. This week we will be exploring the melting properties of a few different substances. This Thursday, October 20th we will be headed over to the Fire Station for a visit. We will be learning about fire safety, and we will get to explore some of their tools. Our class will be leaving right after lunch, around 12:45, and we should be back to the school around 2:00. I am still looking for a couple more permission slips for this trip, so please get those back in as soon as possible. Thank you! On Friday, October 28th we will be doing our annual fall parade at the school. Students may choose to wear their school appropriate costumes for the parade and the school day if they wish. Students will have time to change into costumes before the parade if they choose not to wear costumes all day. We will be having a special classroom snack before the parade. If you would like to sign up to send in something for that event you can use this link here: Thank you in advance for contributing! This year we do not have food allergies that we need to be cautious of in our classroom, and we have 18 students. At the end of the month I will be sending out the sign up for parent conferences. These will be taking place the week of November 7th and 14th. You will have the option to choose from an in person conference, a phone call, or a Zoom meeting. I look forward to meeting with you all!
10/3/2022 0 Comments September ExcitementHello Families, Last week we had a wonderful trip to the Palace Theater. The second graders all did a fabulous job attending the show, and we found a lot of differences between the movie and the performance. Last week we also started our official reading and writing workshops. We will be learning about how we can make our reading "grow like beanstalks", and in writing we will be focusing on personal narratives to start the year. As a class, we have been working on our partner talk skills. There is a lot of partner work in our workshop times, so it is important that we learn how and keep practicing to work in partnerships. Our math has focused on mental math strategies with addition. This week we will move to mental math strategies with subtraction. The family letter from our math journals will come home at the beginning of each lesson to give some more insight into what we're practicing along with strategies to reinforce the skills at home. On Friday, we began our first science unit where we will explore the different properties of materials. Our first investigation involved creating a hat to protect ourselves from the sun on a desert island. It needed to have a stiff brim to keep the sun out of our faces, and we wanted it soft and absorbent enough on our skin to help soak up the sweat. The trick was we only had what washed up with our lunch box! The students had a lot of fun creating and building during this challenge. Just a reminder that there is no school this Friday 10/7 for a Teacher Workshop Day. There is also no school on Monday 10/10 for the holiday. I hope you all have a wonderful week!
