9/14/2022 0 Comments Upcoming EventsHello Families,
We have been hard at work here adjusting to our second grade learning. Today we started our fall math i-Ready assessment. Most students paused about half way through the test, and we will have tomorrow morning to finish up. Next week, on Thursday and Friday we will do the reading portion. Last week, you should have received a permission slip for our 2nd grade field trip. On Thursday, September 29th we will be going to the Palace Theater in Manchester to see The Little Mermaid. Please return those permission forms as soon as possible. If the $18 cost causes any financial hardship, please don't hesitate to reach out. We have systems in place to assist with any need. Next week, on Thursday, September 22nd we will have our CWES Open House. The school will be open from 5:30-7:00 with various booths available to visit, along with the BOOK FAIR! Our 2nd grade presentations will begin at 6:00, but you are welcome to come visit the classroom at any point during the evening. I hope to see many of you there! We have some special projects that we have started working on, and we are excited to show them off! -Mrs. Duval

9/2/2022 0 Comments Welcome to 2nd GradeDear Families,
I am happy to officially introduce myself as your child's 2nd grade teacher! My name is Hannah Duval, and this is my eighth year at Center Woods. This week we have been busy getting to know each other and learning about our classroom. We have been practicing routines, and we have started to build our classroom community. Next week we will begin to introduce more of our academic routines for this school year. We will be doing some counting collections to kick off our math year. This will allow students to do a seemingly simple task, counting, but by counting a large collection of items a surprising amount of math thinking comes out! Students will work with partners to develop strategies to help track their count and be able to check their work after they finish. We will learn from other groups' strategies, and then apply that to our new collection the next day. Next week we will also start our word work program here in class with a review of letter formation and sounds. During our reader's and writer's workshop time we will begin to build up our stamina and explore our classroom library. On Wednesday, I introduced the first homework assignment of the year. You should have seen this in their blue folders. Students will be creating a "Small Moment Page" to explain about themselves and create a collection of things they know a lot about. We will use this as inspiration all year long during writer's workshop. These should be completed by next Thursday, September 8th. We will be starting our fall I-Ready assessments on the week of 9/12. Our math assessment will be first, followed by our reading assessment the following week. Both tests will be completed in the classroom, or in a small group setting with a different teacher, and will be broken up over two days. This data helps us plan intervention groups, and it helps us track student progress over the course of the year. This year lunch and breakfast are no longer free. If you are having any trouble adding money to your child's lunch account, please reach out to the office for help. Children can also purchase a milk to go along with a lunch brought from home. Our UA schedule is different this year than last year. Students are in each UA for a 5 day rotation. The hope is that this will allow the UA teachers to dive in to deeper instruction, because students can pick up their learning the next day rather than waiting a week. We started with computers this week, and next week students will move on to library. Please feel free to reach out to me throughout the year as questions or concerns come up. I look forward to meeting you all, and working together to ensure your child has a productive and positive 2nd grade year! Have a wonderful weekend, Mrs. Duval |
